Bruce Goodlad
Bruce was born and brought up in the west of Scotland. The Scottish mountains gave him a classic apprenticeship in climbing and mountaineering and the Scouts gave him a taste of skiing, but it wasn’t until he was struggling knee-deep in soft snow down a glacier after a winter route in Chamonix that he realised he needed to learn to ski. After studying for a geography degree at Glasgow University, Bruce spent the following year as a trainee instructor at Glenmore Lodge on the 'Night Watch Scheme'. It was during this year under the tolerant tutelage of 'Lodge' instructors that he actually learnt how to ski and discovered ski touring.
Ski touring has become a life-long passion that has taken Bruce all over the world, ski touring and guiding in Antarctica, Greenland, Norway, Iceland, the Alps, Argentina, Japan, Armenia, Sweden, Canada, the USA and Russia. He is always looking for the next new place to explore and share with his clients.
Bruce qualified as an IFMGA guide in 2001. Since 2008 he has been involved in the training of mountain guides and served as the Technical Director for the British Mountain Guides from 2012 to 2016. Much of his focus during that period was the development of the avalanche education and ski guiding for trainee guides.
He also partners Mike Austin in the avalanche education business (www.avalanchegeeks.com).
Bruce now lives full time in the Alps with his wife and two children; he is the author of two previous books also by Pesda Press: Alpine Mountaineering and Ski Touring.
