Dartmoor Trail and Fell Running, outlines some of the best trail and fell running routes the national park has to offer. Whether it be climbing over the rugged, northern 600m tors, or tearing along an 18th century leat from a Napoleonic prison, this off-road running guide has options to suit all tastes and abilities.
Its aim is to highlight the best of what Dartmoor has to offer for the runner. Whether you are an experienced, weather-beaten trail warrior looking to explore a set of different trails, or a lean, mean road running machine keen to mix it up and add a bit of trail work to your training.
The routes included in this guide are not by any means the limit. Indeed, there is an abundance of other routes available, but understanding where to run is often a barrier. This book is just your starting point.

Came for the routes, but got hooked on the advice. Colin removes the fear of the unknown from fell running and explains the world of waterproofs, shoes, navigation, what to eat and much more with humour and experience, cutting through the marketing of the latest and greatest kit. How you run is a personal choice, one which Colin encourages from page 1. As for the routes, I am biased living close to Dartmoor. From a first time fell runner learning to navigate through the landscape, to a seasoned veteran of the Tors, there are routes for everyone. The notes prior to each route add context and history, making each one more than a physical and navigational experience. Colin really has distilled the best running Dartmoor has to offer into a single volume.

Colin’s straight forward approach to running really comes across in the way the book is presented. His philosophy, like the routes and their descriptions, is based on years of experience and careful research. All of it tempered with humility and a healthy dose of humour. The spread of routes in terms of their location, technicality and length is superb, meaning there is something for everyone for all occasions. Many of the routes in popular areas have something a little different about them to add an extra bit of interest. This makes it an ideal book for anyone who is wanting to start running in the beautiful expanse of Dartmoor, as much as it provides inspiration for those seeking new places to go, or challenges to undertake. It is without doubt the greatest collection of routes for what is arguably (and I’m sure Colin would love to) one of the best locations you can run off-road in the country.

What a great book. A really refreshing read. I love the writing style as it doesn’t beat about the bush! The variety of walks in different parts of the moor are well described and the grading scale is really helpful as you can judge whether or not the route is within your capabilities. There really is something for every ability of off road runner. The content is informative, entertaining, useful and motivating. Thanks Colin for writing this book and hope to see many more (moor!).

This is an inspirational book. Colin describes a variety of routes from all over the moor. These showcase what Dartmoor can offer and provide a starting point for exploring unfamiliar areas. I’d strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in running on Dartmoor!
